My guess is that you computer has run out of memory and is swapping a lot, causing the slow indexing. Indexing all the images does require reading the actual files so a fragmented harddrive could also be a reason. I regularly view more than 5k images and even from archives it does not take that long. 
As for the small window size, the windows are all resizable and customizable, you can also select among a number of preset layouts. Try a double-click on the playlist window to select the default "playlist" layout.

            <title>Hard to figure out by Diddlbiker with average rate 2.5</title>

                The program took more than 5 minutes to start up while cataloging my picture folder. I could only choose pictures through an 2"x2" thumbnail window containing 1"x1" thumbnails. This is bad, since I have almost 4000 photos.<br />
